#HumansOfSupport is a storytelling series by Help Scout featuring support professionals sharing their experiences working in customer service.
A Strength Found

I had a lightbulb go off a year ago, when all team members in my company completed “Strengths Finder 2.0” by Don Clifton, Gallup, and Tom Rath. My number one strength was EMPATHY. Something that I had battled with for literally my entire life and it was listed as a strength?!

I had always hated that about myself — I’m overly sensitive, I feel too deeply for others, and I get frustrated with myself for not being able to “turn it off.” I was transitioning out of a marketing role in our company, and moving into a support role. It wasn’t until we took the “Strengths Finder” that Stella—Audra basically got her groove back.

I can now fully embrace the way my mind works, how I handle confrontation, and my ability to spit out fires. My company has congratulated me on my strength, and have fully supported my position, which has now resulted in a role on the executive team. Something that I have always found frustrating is now the reason that my job is fun. I was born for customer support, and it took me 34 years to figure it out.
